Changes in the Pattern of Furniture over the Centuries



From ancient history till now the ideas of furniture designs evolved around the world. The kind of material these days carpenters use and the advancement in technology explains story in itself. People can categorize the history of furniture from its style, the period in which it was being made, the materials used in making them. 

Prehistoric furniture: In initial times when people started living permanently in a place they started making furniture. In earliest times in Europe people used to make furniture of stone in one the villages of Scotland about 2,000 BC. They used to live in the hut of stone and made beds and cupboards of stone.

Ancient Egyptian furniture: In Egypt people used to live in large and comfortable houses with huge and many rooms. They also started using  furniture of wood such as bed, chairs, and tables. In fact, they were also using a pillow of wooden for head rests. While ordinary people used to live in mud houses and had basic furniture.

Ancient Greek furniture: In Greek even rich people used to have basic furniture into their homes. The Greeks used to store things in wooden chest drawers. They often found using dressers to show expensive crockery of their home. They had couches of wooden frames and rope, webbing mats on top.

Roman furniture: In Rome also rich people used to enjoy a luxurious life. They also had a central heating system called a hypocaust. The wealthy people used to have furniture which was finely carved and upholstered. Apparently, the poor in the Rome had basic and sparse furniture.

Saxon furniture: In early time the life of the Saxons was difficult. Many people used to share the same room in the Saxon hall. In Saxon hall the upper class used to sleep on the bed and the lower class on the floor.

16th Century: In 16th century furniture became more comfortable, but still it was basic. The rich people started using heavy furniture made up of Oak. People used to pass their furniture to their future generation. The chairs were common, though expensive. Chimneys were also in trend among rich people at that time. In fact rich people also started living in a four poster bed used to hand with curtains.

17th Century: There were not many changes in the furniture pattern in early 17th century. However in the late 17th century rich started making furniture of walnut and mahogany and also started decorating it in different ways. Also, bright colours were used to coat the furniture with lacquer. Also in Stuart time’s new type of furniture were introduced. Chest drawers and grandfather clock became popular in the mid-17th century.

18th Century: In the 18th century wealthy has most comfortable furniture. In fact, many people published their catalogue in this century. 

19th Century: In this century the furniture production was mass and also it was inexpensive. However, this also lower downs the designs and standards of the furniture. In the early 19th century skilled workers usually keep their first room with the best of furniture and ornaments. As this century passes more and more Victorian could afford the furniture.

20th Century: The trend of 19th century also followed here. People used to keep best of their furniture in the first room. During 20th century furniture quality of ordinary people increased with great quality and design. In the 1920’s-1930’s the art of furniture and architecture was introduced. It was named as Art deco which came into existence an exhibition held in Paris. In this art people used geometrical shapes instead of flowing lines. Two famous furniture designer of this century are John Makepeace and Ron Arad

Now let’s talk about 21st century in which not only the designs of furniture have changed drastically but the way the people buy them has also changed. People these days prefer online furniture shopping India as its more convenient way of shopping than going market places. Multiple brands are showcasing their masterpieces online that too at very competitive prices and offering bundles of features as well to lure the customers.
